IT Can't Fix Complex Healthcare Problems – Information Week

The healthcare industry is undergoing a large amount of change as it adopts new technologies and tools for managing patient information or communicating between various healthcare services. However, these IT innovations must be accompanied by a change in the relationship between business and IT stakeholders in order to ensure optimal performance:

Electronic systems can ‘make it easier to reduce health spending if other steps in the broader healthcare system are also taken to alter incentives to promote savings … [but] by itself, the adoption of more health IT is generally not sufficient to produce significant cost savings.’ Which is a long way of saying: IT itself can’t fix complex healthcare problems. What we really need is a reengineered healthcare system.
