R.I.P. APM? (Application Performance Management Software)

Where do we currently stand in the evolution of application performance management software? We’ve said time and again that legacy APM solutions are the ones facing extermination. APM solutions with full end to end transaction tracing capabilities  with low overhead and broad coverage will do fine:

Both Wittman and Batchelor are reacting to InformationWeek’s survey results, and both offer worthy opinions on the subject. These range from the inability of traditional APM vendors to adapt to more distributed, dynamic, Cloud-based infrastructure; to suggestions that enterprises are simply dismayed at the amount of effort required to deploy and use APM software for proactive management, thereby leading to their questioning of the benefits.
