Needed: CIO As Strategist

In today’s increasingly complex IT world, CIOs are being asked to do more with less from a budgetary and manpower standpoint. Furthermore, they are expected to provide strategic vision for the business given their typical placement in the corporate hierarchy. They must be able to provide this strategic insight by having the most up to date IT management practices in place. One of these is, undoubtedly, a firm application monitoring strategy. This helps provide business context into what is happening in IT.

The CIO, as someone who sees across the company, is well positioned to shape corporate strategy. But the CIO is often asked merely to be tactical, and strategy isn’t something most CIOs are expected to study in school. Even if a CIO did, the strategy course would probably be misguided, said Cynthia Montgomery, who teaches strategy at Harvard Business School.
